{"id":330,"date":"2015-07-07T14:47:32","date_gmt":"2015-07-07T18:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stewardshipworks.org\/blog\/?p=330"},"modified":"2015-07-07T14:47:32","modified_gmt":"2015-07-07T18:47:32","slug":"our-call-to-christian-conscience-after-scotus-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stewardshipworks.org\/blog\/?p=330","title":{"rendered":"Our Call to Christian Conscience After SCOTUS Ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The recent SCOTUS ruling, though far from unanimous, has significant impact on Christian conscience as it pertains to same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n<p>For Catholics it\u2019s especially difficult. St. Pope John II and Pope Benedict both condemned same-sex marriage saying that Catholics are \u201cobliged to oppose the legal recognition of homosexual unions\u201d and where such unions are given the legal status and rights that belong to marriage, \u201cclear and emphatic opposition is a duty.\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/cfaith\/documents\/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20030731_homosexual-unions_en.html\" target=\"_blank\">Considerations Regarding Proposals to give Legal Recognition to Unions Between Homosexual Persons<\/a>, March 2003).<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, Pope Francis (then Cardinal Bergoglio of Argentina) said that a proposal to legalize same-sex marriage in Argentina was \u201cdestructive of the plan of God\u2026a \u2018move\u2019 of the Father of Lies (John 8:44) who wishes to confuse and deceive the children of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then there was Francis\u2019s famous \u201cwho am I to judge?\u201d remark that gave hope to the LBGT community but was quickly dashed by later remarks in the Philippines. Pope Francis emphasized that support for same-sex marriage is \u201cideological colonization\u2026that is trying to destroy the family.\u201d In a speech in Ireland after that country voted in favor of gay marriage the Pope said, \u201cThe alliance of love between a man and woman, an alliance for life, cannot be improvised, and is not made in a day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Catholics have always been taught that homosexual persons \u201cmust be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity\u201d and that \u201cevery sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/beliefs-and-teachings\/what-we-believe\/catechism\/catechism-of-the-catholic-church\/\" target=\"_blank\">Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>We at the Stewardship Foundation agree with the Church\u2019s teaching on compassion, and with Pope Francis when he said Christians should not \u201clobby\u201d for LBGT orientation. We remain steadfast in our support of marriage between one man and one woman and agree with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) who state that the U.S. Supreme Court decision on July 26 interpreting the Constitution to require all states to license and recognize same-sex \u201cmarriage\u201d is a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/news\/2015\/15-103.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">tragic error<\/a> that harms the common good and most vulnerable among us.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The recent SCOTUS ruling, though far from unanimous, has significant impact on Christian conscience as it pertains to same-sex marriage.
