College Kids Growing Up Catholic

Imagine this! Your college-age child or grandchild home for Thanksgiving break wants to talk about his faith – he speaks about the joy of worship, reading the Bible, and meeting regularly with friends for prayer and sharing. Sounds unbelievable? It’s not.

This student is involved in St. Paul’s Outreach (SPO), active on several college campuses throughout the country. Recently, the Columbus chapter serving the Ohio State and Ohio Dominican Universities celebrated its 10th anniversary. At the annual banquet attended by over 700 supporters and alumni, my nephew Andrew Kebe, SPO’s Ohio Senior Mission Director, recounted his past ten years of service to this organization that has empowered and inspired so many young people and made such a lasting impact on college campuses.

The Stewardship Foundation is honored to partner with this inspiring organization. As a leadership mentor, I’ve been personally blessed with my involvement and proud to be a father and uncle to several students impacted by SPO.

If you have a college-age child or grandchild who could benefit from this ministry, contact Andrew Kebe.

From the Ohio Mission Center

God has given the growth! As we look back at the 2013-2014 school year, we can truly see the effectiveness of God’s grace upon our work. Here is a glimpse of the impact from last year:

  • More than 225 students were involved in small groups on the Ohio State, Ohio Dominican, and West Virginia campuses.
  • 4 SPO Ohio alumni entered formation for priestly or religious life and 11 more agreed to serve as full-time missionaries with a Catholic ministry. In 10 years, 72 SPO Ohio alumni have served at least one year of full-time missionary work, 21 are currently in religious or priestly formation, and 73 are now married and starting families.
  • SPO Ohio continued to collaborate in close partnership with the St. Thomas More Newman Center at OSU, particularly on building a stronger Catholic Bible Study program and kicking off the school year with Catholic Rush Week.
  • We completed the renovations on our new home on 13th Avenue, bringing our evangelization efforts to a new frontier in the heart of OSU’s off-campus housing and Greek houses.

The Metaphor of the Jugs

Because you keep up with The Stewardship Foundation, you know that our mission is to champion, evangelize, and facilitate transformational giving as it pertains to gift planning. In the early days, when the foundation wasn’t much more than a twinkle in Joe Finneran’s eye, we turned to the miracle at Cana as a metaphor for transformation.

brochure jugsWith the help of friends who own better cameras that we do, we set out to create a visual representation of the miracle of changing simple water to wine. Taking the kinds of jugs and woven baskets usually found only at flea markets or Pier 1, we staged our props in a sunny outdoor location that we hoped might resemble a wedding garden. Our problem? Pouring water into the first jug, having the water turn into wine in the second jug, and spill over into the third jug. Where’s a good miracle when you need one? Our solution came through the miracle of Photoshop and the skills of our good friends and creative team at ActiveCanvas.

This month, we were honored to be “bronze sponsors” at the annual conference for Heartbeat International held in Charleston, SC where over 900 faithful servants gathered to be trained, equipped and inspired to celebrate the pregnancy help movement around the world. We had the opportunity to place a full-page ad in the conference brochure, so of course we used the jugs as the visual metaphor in our ad.

Whenever someone approached our display table, I asked him or her to check out our ad on page 69 and to stop by later with a thumbs up or thumbs down on whether our message resonated with them and if they understood the metaphor of the jugs. I was overwhelmed with the positive support we received about our message. Everyone “got it” and it was a fun and engaging way to get feedback on the idea and promote our gift planning services.

Pray with us that our planted seeds bear much fruit in the coming months.

You’re Not Alone

walk aloneHeartbeat International serves as the leadership and resource supply line for its ever-growing Pregnancy HELP Centers worldwide. April 2-5, hundreds of pregnancy center directors, supporters, volunteers, affiliates, and support organizations (like us who serve in these pro-life ministries) attended their annual conference in Dallas.

Although participants were refreshed and renewed with great food, inspiring music, and communal worship services, they were also soberly reminded that the task is difficult. They cannot take the cross out of the cross-bearing work that they do, and so they must make peace with the hardship of their ministry.

One of the more poignant messages came from a minister from Liberia, “If you want to go fast then go alone. If you want to go far, then go together.”

Those working in pro-life know they must go far and they accept the hardships of their ministries. We were there to let them to know that, with the Stewardship Foundation by their side, they need not go alone.

As you know, we encourage ethically responsible nonprofits to partner with us. We provide the tools and resources needed by individuals and businesses who are eager to invest beyond the cash donation.

Heartbeat affiliates and all pro-life, pro-family, and pro-freedom nonprofits need not walk alone in their search for
transformational gifts. We are here, intent on walking with them. Will you let us walk farther with you?
